ṛṣaya ūcuḥ yathāsya bhāryā sāvitrī sarvaiva sulakṣaṇaiḥ | avaidhavyakarair ayuktā tathā jīvati satyavān |

The sages said: “Since his wife Sāvitrī is endowed with every auspicious mark—those that avert widowhood and increase marital good fortune—Satyavān is surely alive.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the Mahābhārata’s ethical ideal of steadfast marital virtue (pativratā-dharma): Sāvitrī’s integrity and auspicious qualities are presented as powerful enough to counter misfortune, reinforcing faith in dharma and its protective force.

In the Sāvitrī–Satyavān episode, the sages infer Satyavān’s continued life by observing Sāvitrī’s auspicious marks associated with freedom from widowhood, offering reassurance and a hopeful conclusion to the surrounding tension.
