Sūrya-stava: Dhaumya’s Counsel and the Aṣṭaśata-nāma of Sūrya

etad brahmā dadau pūrvaṃ śakrāya sumahātmane | śakrāc ca nāradaḥ prāpto dhaumyastu tadanantaram | dhaumyād yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāpya sarvān kāmān avāptavān ||

Vaiśampāyana said: This hymn of praise was first bestowed by Brahmā upon the great-souled Śakra (Indra). From Śakra it came to Nārada, and thereafter to Dhaumya. Having received its instruction from Dhaumya, King Yudhiṣṭhira attained the fulfillment of all his rightful desires, in accord with dharma.

Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes the authority and efficacy of a sacred hymn/teaching preserved through an authentic lineage (Brahmā → Indra → Nārada → Dhaumya → Yudhiṣṭhira). When received from a qualified teacher and applied in a dharmic spirit, it leads to the fulfillment of legitimate aims.

Vaiśampāyana explains how a particular stuti (hymn of praise) was transmitted from divine to sage to human teacher, culminating in Yudhiṣṭhira receiving it from Dhaumya and thereby attaining success—framing the hymn as time-tested and spiritually potent.
