Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds human vulnerability and the inevitability of bodily decline, setting the ethical stage for Sāvitrī’s steadfast dharma—care, vigilance, and unwavering commitment in the face of impending loss.

In Mārkaṇḍeya’s narration of the Sāvitrī–Satyavān episode, Satyavān suddenly feels intense pain and weakness (as if his head were pierced) and tells Sāvitrī he can no longer stand and wishes to lie down and sleep—an ominous moment preceding the encounter with Death.
