Vaiśampāyana said: Then the Pāṇḍava brothers, having gone into the forest, sat down one evening together with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). Overwhelmed and absorbed in grief and sorrow, they began to speak among themselves.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames an ethical situation: noble persons in adversity must process grief without losing discernment. It prepares for reflection on dharma under suffering—how speech, counsel, and emotional control shape righteous action even when wronged.
After entering forest exile, the Pāṇḍavas sit at dusk with Draupadī and begin a sorrow-filled conversation. This opening sets up the ensuing dialogue in which Draupadī’s anguish and questions about enemies, justice, and duty will press Yudhiṣṭhira toward a response.
