Vaiśampāyana said: “O best of the Kurus, when the Dānavas’ possession takes hold, even the inner selves of Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the rest will fall under their sway. In that state, fighting without affection, they will strike in battle and spare neither sons nor brothers nor fathers nor kinsmen, neither disciples nor household folk—neither the young nor the old. Compelled, those tiger-like men will cast love far away and, exultant yet inwardly tainted, will smite from a distance with weapons, deluded by ignorance. They will fight as though driven by fate itself—an outcome fashioned by destiny.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how ignorance and inner impurity can eclipse dharma: when the mind is tainted and deluded, even great heroes may abandon natural affection and ethical restraint, acting as if compelled by fate.
Vaiśampāyana describes a grim wartime condition in which renowned warriors (such as Bhīṣma and Droṇa, per the surrounding context) become compelled and deluded, casting off affection and striking fiercely—presented as an outcome driven by destiny.
