I avoid idle and improper talk, give no place to discontent in my heart, and keep away from gossip about others’ affairs. I neither laugh excessively nor give way to excessive anger; indeed, I shun even the occasions that might become a seat of wrath. I am ever devoted to truth and remain engaged in serving my husbands.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches disciplined speech and mind: avoid base talk and gossip, do not nurture dissatisfaction, restrain extremes of laughter and anger, prevent situations that trigger wrath, and uphold truthfulness while faithfully performing one’s household/service duties.

Vaiśampāyana narrates a statement describing a woman’s virtuous conduct—her vows of restraint, truth, and devoted service—presented as an ethical ideal within the Vana Parva discourse.
