Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve
Gandharva Encounter
tadanantaraṁ prajāpatiḥ brahmā mahāsenāya uvāca— “vatsa! adhunā tvaṁ svapitaraṁ tripuravināśakaṁ mahādevaṁ milasva. rudreṇāgniṁ samāviśya svāhām āviśya comayā hitārthaṁ sarvalokānāṁ jātastvam aparājitaḥ.”
After this, Prajāpati Brahmā said to Mahāsena: “My child, now go and meet your father, Mahādeva—the destroyer of Tripura. By Rudra entering into Agni, and by Umā entering into Svāhā, you have been brought forth as an unconquered hero for the welfare of all the worlds.”

Power and victory are portrayed as legitimate when aligned with loka-hita (the welfare of all worlds). The hero’s invincibility is not for egoistic conquest but for sustaining dharma through a divinely sanctioned purpose.
Mārkaṇḍeya reports Brahmā’s instruction to Mahāsena: he should meet his father Śiva (Tripura’s destroyer). Brahmā explains Mahāsena’s extraordinary origin—Rudra’s presence in Agni and Umā’s presence in Svāhā—emphasizing that the birth was arranged for universal benefit.
