Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethic of grace and reciprocity: divine favor can grant imperishable heavenly reward, yet relationships and obligations (ṛṇa) still matter. The speakers seek both spiritual fruit (akṣaya svarga) and a lasting familial bond (keeping the Lord as a son), and they frame the fulfillment of these aims as completing mutual obligation—so the Lord becomes anṛṇa, free of debt.

Mārkaṇḍeya reports a request addressed to a divine ‘Lord’: by his grace the petitioners hope to obtain imperishable heaven, and additionally they wish that he remain their son. They conclude by urging him to accomplish this and thereby be released from any obligation toward them.
