Draupadī’s Instruction on Marital Conduct and Household Discipline (चित्तग्रहण-उपदेश)

tādṛśaṃ viddhi sarveṣām eko hoṣu hutāśanaḥ |

Mārkaṇḍeya said: “Understand all fires to be of the same kind; for in them all there is but one and the same Fire-principle. Therefore, the greatness described of the wondrous fire is to be recognized as the greatness of fire everywhere.”

Educational Q&A

Though fires appear many in form and function, their underlying essence is one—Agni as a single elemental principle. Hence, praise of a particular ‘wondrous’ fire should be extended as praise of fire’s universal nature.

Mārkaṇḍeya is instructing his listener(s) in a reflective, doctrinal manner, drawing a general conclusion from a specific account of Agni’s greatness: the same sacred fire-principle pervades all manifestations of fire.
