Mārkaṇḍeya said: Atharvan, by the power of his own asceticism, brought forth the worlds. Having beheld Agni, the Fire-god, and while all beings looked on, he churned the great ocean—thus revealing creation in a wondrous act that displays tapas and cosmic order.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights tapas and spiritual potency as forces that uphold and manifest cosmic order: a realized sage, aligned with divine principles (symbolized by Agni), can accomplish world-sustaining acts that inspire awe and reaffirm dharma’s underlying structure.

Markandeya narrates a marvel: Atharvan, after beholding Agni, creates the worlds by his own power and churns the great ocean in the sight of all beings—an image of primordial activity associated with the emergence and ordering of creation.
