“There I shall describe the many kinds of sacred fires—radiant and mighty—renowned through numerous rites and actions, and understood among Brahmins here as serving diverse purposes.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
That sacred fires are not a single, uniform concept: Brahminical tradition recognizes multiple kinds of ritual fires, each established and made authoritative through specific karmas (rites), and each serving distinct religious aims.
Mārkaṇḍeya begins an instructional passage, announcing that he will enumerate and explain various powerful, radiant ritual fires, noted in Brahmin practice for their different functions and purposes.
