Śaunaka said: Through disciplined regulation of diet and way of living; through proper study and the gaining of sacred knowledge; through the right laying down of actions in a spirit of surrender; and through steady restraint of the mind—by these well-practised means a person attains the highest good.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that the highest welfare is reached through integrated discipline: regulated diet and lifestyle, authentic study of sacred knowledge, renouncing actions in the right spirit (especially relinquishing attachment and offering acts to the Divine), and restraining the mind. It presents liberation-oriented ethics grounded in self-mastery and right practice.

Śaunaka is speaking in an instructive mode, summarizing the means by which a seeker attains supreme good. The focus is not on an external event but on a compact teaching about disciplined living, learning, renunciation, and mental control.
