For the gods do show compassion toward their devotees; and all the more, they surely extend mercy toward Brahmins who are devoted to good conduct and uphold righteous discipline.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Divine favor is linked to devotion and ethical living: the gods are compassionate to devotees in general, and especially to those Brahmins who steadfastly uphold sadācāra (good conduct).
Vaiśampāyana, as narrator, states a general principle about how the gods respond to human beings—highlighting that devotion and disciplined conduct, particularly among Brahmins, attract divine compassion.
