Vaiśampāyana said: “O King, that excellent discernment is said to be eight-limbed—endowed with the disciplines of yoga—and it strikes down all that obstructs true welfare. Strengthened by the study and guidance of Śruti and Smṛti, that wisdom abides in you.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
True welfare (śreyas) is protected by disciplined, eightfold yogic discernment (buddhi) that is grounded in Śruti and Smṛti; such wisdom removes harmful tendencies and obstacles and should be recognized as an inner strength already present in the righteous ruler.
The narrator Vaiśampāyana addresses a king and affirms that the king already possesses an exalted, scripturally grounded wisdom described as ‘eight-limbed,’ praising his capacity for self-governance and dharmic judgment.
