Mārkaṇḍeya said: “When the end of the age draws near, people will, little by little, seek refuge elsewhere—abandoning their own homelands for other regions, directions, towns, and villages. Then, crying out to one another in voices of extreme anguish—‘Alas, father! Alas, my son!’—they will wander over the earth. Such will be the condition of the world at the age’s end, when a dreadful destruction overtakes all peoples at once.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse underscores the overwhelming power of Time (kāla) at the end of an age: social order collapses, people abandon their homes seeking safety, and familial bonds surface as cries of grief—highlighting impermanence and the fragility of worldly security.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes a yugānta scenario: widespread flight and wandering as people seek refuge, calling out in anguish for lost family members, culminating in a simultaneous, terrifying destruction affecting all communities.
