Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
evaṁ paryākule loke maryādā na bhaviṣyati | na sthāsyanty upadeśe ca śiṣyā vipriyakāriṇaḥ ||
When the world is thrown into such turmoil, no boundaries of propriety will remain. Disciples will no longer abide by their teacher’s instruction; instead, acting contrary to it, they will bring harm and displeasure upon their own guides.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
Social and moral order (maryādā) depends on respect for rightful instruction and discipline. When society becomes agitated and confused, the guru–śiṣya bond collapses: students stop following guidance and even act in ways that harm their teachers, signaling a broader decline of dharma.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing the consequences of a world plunged into upheaval: established norms will not hold, and even the traditional relationship of disciples adhering to a teacher’s counsel will break down, with students becoming contrary and harmful.
