Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration

bhaviṣyanti narā nityaṁ tadā saṁkṣepsyate yugam | puṣpaṁ puṣpe yadā rājan phale vā phalam āśritam |

Mārkaṇḍeya said: “When people become continually so corrupted that the age itself is cut short, know that the end of the yuga is at hand. O king, when unnatural signs appear—when a flower bears another flower, or a fruit bears another fruit—then understand that dissolution is approaching.”

Educational Q&A

The passage teaches that widespread moral collapse (loss of dharma) is mirrored by disorder in nature; such ethical and cosmic imbalance signals the approaching end of an age (yugānta).

Sage Mārkaṇḍeya addresses a king and describes portents of the yuga’s end, including unnatural botanical phenomena (a flower producing a flower, a fruit producing a fruit), as indicators that the era is being cut short.
