Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
mlecchabhūtaṃ jagat sarvaṃ bhaviṣyati yudhiṣṭhira | na śrāddhaiḥ tarpayiṣyanti daivatānīha mānavāḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “O Yudhiṣṭhira, the whole world will in time become like the mlecchas—estranged from sacred order. People here will no longer satisfy the divine powers through śrāddha rites and sacrificial duties.”
The verse warns that when society abandons śrāddha and sacrificial duties, it signals a broader collapse of dharmic culture—gratitude to ancestors and reverence to the divine are treated as pillars of ethical and social order.
Mārkaṇḍeya addresses Yudhiṣṭhira with a prophetic description of future degeneration: the world will become ‘mleccha-like,’ and people will cease to propitiate the gods through traditional rites such as śrāddha and yajña-related acts.
