Brāhmaṇa-māhātmya: Tārkṣya’s instruction on tapas, satya, and svadharma

Chapter 182

तत्र वै मानुषाल्लोकाद्‌ दानादिभिरतन्द्रित: । अहिंसार्थसमायुक्तै: कारणै: स्वर्गमश्लुते,इनमेंसे जो जीव मनुष्ययोनिमें उत्पन्न होता है, पर यदि आलस्य और प्रमादका त्याग करके अहिंसाका पालन करते हुए दान आदि शुभ कर्म करता है, तो उसे इन पुण्य कर्मोंके कारण स्वर्गलोककी प्राप्ति होती है

tatra vai mānuṣāllokād dānādibhir atandritaḥ | ahiṃsārthasamāyuktaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ svargam aśnute ||

From the human world, one who is diligent—casting off laziness and heedlessness—attains heaven through causes such as charity and other auspicious deeds, especially those aligned with the purpose of ahiṃsā (non-violence). Thus the serpent teaches that human birth becomes fruitful when one actively practices non-violence and performs meritorious acts that lead to higher realms.
