Vaiśampāyana said: With eyes reddened by anger, he suddenly spoke these words: “How could this have happened?” (This is said in response to the rākṣasas’ report that a single man had accomplished the deed and that what should be done next ought now to be decided—prompting Kubera, lord of the yakṣas, to flare up in wrath.)

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how sudden anger and disbelief arise when established power is challenged by an unexpected agent; ethically, it points to the need for measured inquiry and discernment before action, even when one feels affronted.

After hearing the rākṣasas’ report that a single man has carried out the deed and that the next proper step should be decided, Kubera—the lord of the yakṣas—becomes enraged, his eyes redden, and he blurts out in astonishment: “How is this possible?”
