Lomaśa said: “O King, then Indra, granting a boon in accordance with the words of the great ascetic Yavakrī, declared: ‘Yavakrī, you shall obtain, together with your father, the knowledge of the Vedas as fully as you desire. And whatever other wish you cherish shall also be fulfilled. Now abandon this austerity and return to your hermitage.’ Thus, his desire accomplished, Yavakrī went to his father and spoke as follows.”

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights the ethical tension between ascetic effort (tapas) and the pursuit of desired outcomes (kāma). Even when divine grace grants knowledge and wishes, the narrative frames fulfillment as something to be integrated back into disciplined life—returning to the āśrama and to one’s familial/teacher lineage—rather than remaining in self-willed striving.

Lomaśa recounts how Indra grants Yavakrī a boon: complete Vedic knowledge as desired, along with fulfillment of any other wish, and instructs him to stop his austerities and return to his hermitage. Having achieved his aim, Yavakrī goes to his father and begins to speak.
