Vibhāṇḍaka said: “My son, these are indeed rākṣasas who roam this forest by assuming such wondrous, pleasing forms. They possess unmatched power and attractive appearances, and they are always devising ways to obstruct the austerities of sages.”

Educational Q&A

The verse warns that spiritual practice attracts opposition and that harmful forces may appear in alluring disguises; discernment and vigilance are necessary to protect tapas and dharma.

Vibhāṇḍaka cautions his son that wondrous, attractive forms seen in the forest can be rākṣasas in disguise, whose aim is to create obstacles for sages’ austerities.
