(Samudra-pānam) — Maitrāvaruṇi Drains the Ocean; Devas Seek a Means to Refill It
idaṃ ca samanuprāptaṃ lokānāṃ bhayam uttamam | na ca jānīma keneme rātrau vadhyante brāhmaṇāḥ ||
“And now a most dreadful fear has come upon the people. We do not know by whom these brāhmaṇas are being slain at night.”
The verse highlights a dharmic crisis: when the learned and innocent (brāhmaṇas) are harmed, society falls into fear and disorder. It implies the moral duty of leadership and community to identify wrongdoing and restore protection and justice.
A speaker reports that a severe fear has gripped the people because brāhmaṇas are being killed at night by an unknown assailant. The statement functions as an appeal for intervention—someone with authority or power must investigate and stop the killings.
