The Restraint of the Vindhya

Agastya’s Injunction

At night, intoxicated with reliance on the strength of their own arms, the Kāleya demons harass and oppress (the forest-dwellers). Driven on by Time’s destructive force, they keep slaughtering great numbers of twice-born Brahmins—thus advancing in a cruel, covert campaign against ascetics and the dharmic order.

Educational Q&A

Brute strength and arrogance (bhuja-bala-āśraya, mattāḥ) lead to adharma when unchecked; the verse frames the demons’ violence as a collapse of moral order, and also as being driven by Kāla—highlighting the Mahābhārata theme that ethical vigilance and protection of the righteous are necessary amid forces of destruction.

The Kāleya demons, emboldened by their physical power, attack at night and kill many dvijas (Brahmin ascetics). The narration emphasizes their nocturnal harassment and repeated slaughter, portraying a sustained threat to forest hermitages and the ascetic communities.
