अध्याय ८ — शल्यस्य सत्कारः, वरदानं, पाण्डवसमागमश्च (Śalya’s Reception, the Boon, and Meeting the Pāṇḍavas)

Śalya said: “In that battle I shall certainly become his charioteer. For he always regards me as equal to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in the art of charioteering.”
The verse highlights how reputation and personal estimation shape wartime decisions: Karṇa’s high regard for Śalya’s charioteering (even equating it with Kṛṣṇa’s) becomes a strategic lever. It also points to the ethical tension in war where roles like ‘charioteer’ are not merely technical but can influence morale, judgment, and outcomes.
During the pre-war negotiations and preparations, Śalya declares that he will certainly serve as Karṇa’s charioteer in the coming battle, noting that Karṇa consistently considers him equal to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in that capacity—setting up an important strategic dynamic for the Kurukṣetra war.
