अध्याय ८ — शल्यस्य सत्कारः, वरदानं, पाण्डवसमागमश्च (Śalya’s Reception, the Boon, and Meeting the Pāṇḍavas)

अहं तस्य भविष्यामि संग्रामे सारथिर्धुवम्‌ । वासुदेवेन हि सम॑ नित्यं मां स हि मन्यते,शल्य बोले--पाण्डुनन्दन! तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। तुम मेरी बात सुनो! युद्धमें महामना सूतपुत्र कर्णके तेज और उत्साहको नष्ट करनेके लिये तुम जो मुझसे अनुरोध करते हो, वह ठीक है। यह निश्चय है कि मैं उस युद्धमें उसका सारथि होऊँगा। स्वयं कर्ण भी सदा मुझे सारथिकर्ममें भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्णके समान समझता है

ahaṁ tasya bhaviṣyāmi saṅgrāme sārathir dhruvam | vāsudevena hi samaṁ nityaṁ māṁ sa hi manyate ||

Śalya said: “In that battle I shall certainly become his charioteer. For he always regards me as equal to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in the art of charioteering.”
