Educational Q&A

Even if destiny (diṣṭa) shapes a person’s situation, self-performed action (svayaṃkṛta karma) also functions as a real cause for achieving results; therefore personal effort is meaningful and demonstrable by examples.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Bhīma argues forcefully about causation and responsibility: he insists that outcomes are not only a matter of fate, because human initiative and self-made action also bring about success.
