Thus, in the sacred Mahābhārata, within the Udyoga Parva—specifically the Yāna–Saṃdhi Parva on the mission and negotiations—the sixty-fourth chapter, containing Vidura’s counsel, comes to its close. This closing formula marks the completion of his ethical and political admonitions, set within the wider endeavor to avert war through wisdom and diplomacy.
विदुर उवाच
This verse is a colophon rather than a doctrinal statement: it signals the completion of a chapter centered on Vidura’s counsel. In context, it underscores the Mahābhārata’s ethical emphasis on wise speech, dharma-guided statecraft, and the attempt to resolve conflict through negotiation before resorting to war.
The text is closing the sixty-fourth chapter of the Udyoga Parva’s Yāna–Saṃdhi section, identifying it as the chapter containing Vidura’s words. It functions as an editorial/narrative boundary marker indicating that Vidura’s discourse for this chapter has concluded.
