Sañjaya said: When they had taken their seats there, I carefully observed Arjuna’s two beautiful feet, which had been drawn back from the footstool. On the soles I could make out upward-running lines, and both feet bore many auspicious marks. Then I saw Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna—dark-hued, broad-built, youthful, rising like the lofty trunks of śāla trees—seated together on a single seat; and at that sight a great fear seized my heart.

The passage highlights how outward signs (auspicious marks, shared seat, heroic stature) are read as indicators of destiny and moral consequence. Sañjaya’s fear reflects the ethical weight of the coming conflict: when extraordinary power and purpose align, the stakes for dharma and adharma become immense.
Sañjaya reports what he sees: Arjuna’s feet with auspicious markings, and then Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna sitting together on one seat, both appearing powerful and youthful. This sight fills Sañjaya with dread, foreshadowing the decisive role of their unity in the impending war.
