Sanatsujāta on Vedic Learning, Truth (Satya), and the Discipline of Dama–Tyāga–Apramāda

समा गुरौ यथा वृत्तिर्गुरुपत्न्यां तथा55चरेत्‌ । तत्युत्रे च तथा कुर्वन्‌ द्वितीय: पाद उच्यते

samā gurau yathā vṛttir guru-patnyāṃ tathā caret | tat-putre ca tathā kurvan dvitīyaḥ pāda ucyate ||

One should conduct oneself toward the teacher’s wife exactly as one behaves toward the teacher himself. Acting in the same manner toward the teacher’s son as well—this is declared to be the second ‘foot’ (pāda), the second step, of right conduct. The teaching emphasizes disciplined reverence and moral restraint within the guru’s household as a foundation of dharma.

Educational Q&A

Maintain the same reverent, disciplined conduct toward the guru’s wife as toward the guru, and extend similar respectful propriety to the guru’s son; this is presented as a defined step in ethical training.

Sanatsujata is instructing (within the Udyoga Parva’s counsel-setting) on standards of dharmic behavior, outlining specific rules of conduct connected to the guru’s household as part of a structured ethical teaching.
