Sanatsujāta–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Saṃvāda: Pramāda as Mṛtyu
Chapter 42
tasya paryeṣaṇaṁ gacchet pratyarthiṣu kathaṁcana | avicinvan nimaṁ vede tapaḥ paśyati taṁ prabhum ||
Sanatsujāta said: One should not seek That Supreme in external objects or in anything that stands as a rival to the spirit. Nor should one hunt for Him merely in the words of the Veda. Through tapas—disciplined inner austerity and concentrated inquiry into the Self—one beholds that Lord.
Do not look for the Supreme in external conflict, rivalry, or mere verbal scholarship; realization comes through tapas—disciplined inner practice and concentrated pursuit of the Self.
In the Sanatsujātīya section of Udyoga Parva, Sanatsujāta instructs (in a context of moral and spiritual counsel before the great war) that true knowledge of the Lord is not gained by outward searching or argument, but by inner austerity and direct realization.
