Sanatsujāta-Āhvāna (Summoning Sanatsujāta) — Vidura’s Invocation and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Doubt
lokaḥ svabhāvavṛttihi nimeṣonmeṣavat sadā | vidvāṁso mānayantīha iti manyeta mānitaḥ ||
Sanatsujāta said: “In this world, the conduct that arises from one’s own nature goes on continually, like the opening and closing of the eyes. Therefore, when the learned show honor here, the one who is honored should understand it thus: ‘This is the natural disposition of good people—to offer respect.’”
Do not become proud when honored by the wise; understand that honoring others is the natural, effortless habit of good and learned people, like blinking.
In the Sanatsujāta dialogue within Udyoga Parva, Sanatsujāta instructs the listener on ethical attitude and inner discipline, here emphasizing humility in response to praise and respect.
