Vidura teaches that certain inner and outer forces steadily strip a person of their best possessions. Old age takes away beauty; hope, when it turns into clinging expectation, erodes steadiness; death removes the life-breath; fault-finding envy destroys the practice of dharma; desire ruins modesty; serving ignoble people undermines good conduct; anger destroys prosperity; and pride can wipe out everything. The warning is ethical and practical: guard the mind, because moral collapse often begins with these subtle thieves.
