यावत् कीर्तिर्मिनुष्यस्य पुण्या लोके प्रगीयते । तावत् स पुरुषव्याप्र स्वर्गलोके महीयते,पुरुषश्रेष्ठ] इस लोकमें जबतक मनुष्यकी पावन कीर्तिका गान किया जाता है, तबतक वह स्वर्गलोकमें प्रतिष्ठित होता है
yāvat kīrtir manuṣyasya puṇyā loke pragīyate | tāvat sa puruṣavyāghra svargaloke mahīyate ||
Vidura said: As long as a person’s holy fame is sung in this world, for so long is he honored and exalted in heaven. The endurance of one’s good name among people becomes the measure of one’s lasting reward beyond this life, urging rulers and warriors alike to choose dharma over short-lived gain.
विदुर उवाच
Lasting honor in the afterlife is tied to enduring righteous reputation in this world; therefore one should act in dharma so that one’s fame remains worthy of praise.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura is giving moral and political counsel during the tense pre-war negotiations, reminding the addressed hero/king that true greatness is measured by virtuous fame that outlives the body.
