After offering respectful salutations, you should then address our grandsire. Say to him, “Grandfather! You rescued and raised again the lineage of Śāntanu when it had sunk into decline. Now, reflecting once more with your own discernment, do something by which all your grandsons may live together in mutual affection.”

Respectful speech and moral persuasion should be used to avert conflict: Yudhiṣṭhira urges honoring elders and appealing to Bhīṣma’s past merit and responsibility to restore harmony among the grandsons, prioritizing familial concord over escalation.
In the pre-war negotiations of the Udyoga Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira instructs a messenger to salute Bhīṣma and remind him that he once saved Śāntanu’s lineage; he is now asked to employ his wisdom again to bring the Kuru cousins to live in mutual affection.
