Without truly understanding this dharma as it stood in the royal assembly, you now wish to instruct the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) about righteousness. Yet Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), entering that very hall, performed a deed both pure and exceedingly difficult: she acted so as to save the Pāṇḍavas and herself from a great calamity. Even while standing near her elders by marriage, the charioteer’s son Karṇa insulted her, declaring that she had no other course but to become a slave and go to Duryodhana’s palace, that the Pāṇḍavas—having lost themselves in the dice—were no longer her husbands, and that she should choose another husband.

Educational Q&A

Moral instruction must be grounded in real understanding of dharma and context; those who enabled or ignored injustice in the assembly are not fit to lecture the righteous. Draupadī’s courageous appeal in the court is upheld as a pure, difficult act that resisted adharma and protected the vulnerable.

Vāyudeva addresses Sañjaya, recalling the injustice of the dice-hall and Draupadī’s peril. He highlights Draupadī’s brave intervention in the assembly and cites Karṇa’s harsh, humiliating words that attempted to reduce her to slavery and deny her marital status after the Pāṇḍavas’ loss.
