Vāyu said: “Renouncing personal pleasure and restraining the senses, he attained high honor among the gods through the power of righteous action. In the same way, the stars shine in the other world by the force of their deeds; and Rudras, Ādityas, Vasus, and the Viśvedevas too have reached greatness through the strength of karma.”

Educational Q&A

Honor and exalted status—whether among gods or in cosmic orders—arise from disciplined, righteous action: renouncing selfish pleasure, restraining the senses, and living by dharma. Greatness is presented as the fruit of karma supported by self-control.

Vāyu is instructing by example: he points to divine beings and even the stars as evidence that eminence is attained through the power of deeds. The verse functions as moral exhortation within the Udyoga Parva’s counsel-oriented setting.
