Adhyāya 195 — Arjuna’s Capability and Restraint Regarding Divyāstras
Udyoga Parva
तमन्वयात् सत्यधृतिः सौचित्तियद्धदुर्मद: । श्रेणिमान् वसुदानश्च पुत्र: काश्यस्य वा विभु:
tam anvayāt satyadhṛtiḥ saucittiyaddhurmadaḥ | śreṇimān vasudānaś ca putraḥ kāśyasya vā vibhuḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Following him came Satyadhṛti, the Sauchittiya named Durdmada, and also Śreṇimān and Vasudāna—mighty figures, sons of Kāśya—thus joining the procession. The passage underscores how renowned lineages and disciplined leaders align themselves in a larger political-moral movement, where personal valor and inherited duty converge in service of their chosen cause.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the Mahābhārata’s emphasis on social and ethical order: prominent men identified by name and lineage ‘follow’ into a collective enterprise, suggesting that personal identity, inherited responsibility, and political choice are intertwined—one’s dharma is often expressed through the alliances one upholds.
A sequence of notable figures is being enumerated as they join or follow in a larger assembly/progression during the Udyoga Parva’s war-preparatory context, marking the gathering of supporters and the consolidation of forces through recognized lineages.
