Bhīṣma’s Dream-Linked Recollection of the Paraśurāma Combat

Rama said: “Princess of the King of Kāśī! If you are striving for Bhīṣma’s destruction, and if, remaining fixed in your vow, you intend to abandon your body, then, O auspicious one, you must become a winding river. Only in the rainy season will water be seen within you. Access to a ford or the ease of bathing will be obtained only with great difficulty. You will be known merely as a ‘monsoon river’; for the remaining eight months you will scarcely be traceable. Terrible, filled with fearsome crocodiles, you will become a source of dread to all creatures.” Having spoken thus, O king, my supremely fortunate mother, the goddess Gaṅgā, smiling, withdrew from the daughter of Kāśī. After that, the beautiful maiden again undertook severe austerities, sometimes not even drinking water until the eighth month, and sometimes until the tenth.
