Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
अथादृश्यत धर्मात्मा भुगुश्रेष्ठी महातपा: । आह्वयामास च तदा युद्धाय द्विजसत्तम:
athādṛśyata dharmātmā bhṛguśreṣṭhī mahātapāḥ | āhvayāmāsa ca tadā yuddhāya dvijasattamaḥ ||
Then there appeared the righteous, great ascetic—foremost among the Bhṛgus. That best of Brahmins, Paraśurāma, came forward and at once challenged Bhīṣma to battle.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even figures renowned for dharma and austerity may enter conflict when duty, honor, and competing obligations collide; the episode highlights how righteousness is tested in action, not merely proclaimed.
Paraśurāma, described as a supremely austere and righteous Brahmin of the Bhṛgu line, appears and formally challenges Bhīṣma to fight, initiating a major confrontation within the Udyoga Parva narrative.
