Vaiśampāyana said: At the very front marched Bhīmasena, and beside him the armoured son of Mādrī. Leading the army onward were Bhīmasena; the mail-clad Mādrī’s sons Nakula and Sahadeva; Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā; all the sons of Draupadī; Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Drupada; the Prabhadraka warriors; and the Kṣatriya heroes of the land of Pāñcāla. All of them advanced with Bhīmasena placed foremost, making him their vanguard.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic leadership in a martial context: the host advances in disciplined order, collectively choosing a foremost champion (Bhīma) and moving as an allied body. It underscores unity, readiness, and the Kṣatriya ethic of protecting the cause through organized courage rather than isolated heroism.
Vaiśampāyana describes the Pāṇḍava-aligned forces setting out with their leading fighters at the front—Bhīma, the sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva) in armour, Abhimanyu, Draupadī’s sons, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Prabhadrakas, and Pāñcāla warriors—placing Bhīma foremost as the vanguard.
