Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 148: Vāsudeva’s Report—Mobilization and the Nīti Sequence

Sāma–Bheda–Daṇḍa

न चातिष्ठत्‌ पितुः शास्त्रे बलदर्पविमोहित:ः । अवमेने च पितरं 40 क्षाप्पपराजित:

na cātiṣṭhat pituḥ śāstre baladarpavimohitaḥ | avamene ca pitaraṃ kṣāpraparājitaḥ ||

Blinded by the arrogance of his own strength, he did not abide by his father’s injunctions. Unconquered by others, he nonetheless fell into contempt for his own father—showing how pride can overthrow reverence and duty even within one’s own household.

Educational Q&A

Power and invincibility can breed pride that destroys dharma: ignoring a father’s rightful instruction and showing contempt to elders is presented as an ethical downfall, even if one is undefeated by external enemies.

Vāyudeva describes a person whose strength and arrogance have deluded him: he refuses to follow his father’s commands and even disrespects his father, illustrating moral decline within the family sphere.
