Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Dynastic Counsel on Legitimate Rule
नीचै: स्थित्वा तु विदुर उपास्ते सम विनीतवत् । प्रेष्पवत् पुरुषव्याप्रो वालव्यजनमुत्क्षिपन्,“तदनन्तर पुरुषसिंह विदुर सेवककी भाँति नीचे खड़े होकर चँवर डुलाते हुए विनीतभावसे धृतराष्ट्रकी सेवामें रहने लगे
nīcaiḥ sthitvā tu vidura upāste sama-vinītavat | preṣpavat puruṣa-vyāghro vāla-vyajanam utkṣipan ||
Then Vidura, standing humbly below like a well-trained attendant, served Dhṛtarāṣṭra with even-tempered courtesy. Like a tiger among men, he lifted and waved the yak-tail fan (cāmara), choosing disciplined service and self-restraint over pride—an ethical display of duty performed without ego even in a tense royal household.
वायुदेव उवाच
True dharma can appear as humble service: Vidura, though eminent in wisdom and status, restrains ego and performs his duty with calm discipline, showing that ethical greatness is measured by self-control and right conduct, not outward rank.
Vidura stands below like an attendant and serves Dhṛtarāṣṭra by lifting and waving the ceremonial yak-tail fan, remaining respectfully present in the king’s service despite the charged political atmosphere of the Udyoga Parva.
