Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Dynastic Counsel on Legitimate Rule

Then Vidura, standing humbly below like a well-trained attendant, served Dhṛtarāṣṭra with even-tempered courtesy. Like a tiger among men, he lifted and waved the yak-tail fan (cāmara), choosing disciplined service and self-restraint over pride—an ethical display of duty performed without ego even in a tense royal household.

Educational Q&A

True dharma can appear as humble service: Vidura, though eminent in wisdom and status, restrains ego and performs his duty with calm discipline, showing that ethical greatness is measured by self-control and right conduct, not outward rank.

Vidura stands below like an attendant and serves Dhṛtarāṣṭra by lifting and waving the ceremonial yak-tail fan, remaining respectfully present in the king’s service despite the charged political atmosphere of the Udyoga Parva.
