Bhīṣma said: “That king (Pāṇḍu) was your father’s rightful heir, and those sons of his—the Pāṇḍavas—are the legitimate inheritors of their father’s estate. Therefore, dear child Duryodhana, do not create strife; let half the kingdom be granted to them.”

Bhīṣma emphasizes dharma in succession: legitimate heirs should receive their due, and peace should be preserved by fair division rather than fueled by possessiveness and quarrel.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Bhīṣma counsels Duryodhana to avoid conflict by acknowledging the Pāṇḍavas’ rightful claim and granting them half the kingdom.
