“Let a brāhmaṇa sustain himself by going for alms; let a kṣatriya protect the people; let a vaiśya acquire wealth by lawful means; and let a śūdra serve those three.”
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse teaches varṇa-based duties: learning/ritual life supported by alms for the brāhmaṇa, protection and governance for the kṣatriya, wealth-production and commerce for the vaiśya, and service/support for the śūdra—presented as a framework for sustaining social stability and ethical order.
In Udyoga Parva, Vāyu is speaking within a dharma-oriented discourse, laying down normative roles and livelihoods for the four varṇas as part of broader instruction on right conduct and social responsibility.
