Mātali’s Proposal for Guṇakeśī and Sumukha’s Audience with Indra

nārada uvāca | tittirihastibhadraś ca kumudo mālyapiṇḍakaḥ | dvau padmau puṇḍarīkaś ca puṣpo mudūgaraparṇakaḥ | vāsukiḥ takṣakaḥ karkoṭakaḥ dhanañjayaḥ kāliyo nahuṣaḥ kambalaḥ aśvataraḥ bāhukuṇḍaḥ maṇināgaḥ āpūraṇaḥ khagaḥ vāmanaḥ elapatraḥ kukuraḥ kukuṇaḥ āryakaḥ nandakaḥ kalaśaḥ potakaḥ kailāsakaḥ piñjarakaḥ airāvataḥ sumanomukhaḥ dadhimukhaḥ śaṅkhaḥ nandaḥ upanandaḥ āptaḥ koṭarakaḥ śikhī niṣṭhūriko viras tathā surasaḥ—ete cānye bahavo nāgāḥ kaśyapavaṃśajāḥ | mātale! yadiha kaścid varas tava rocate tad paśya |
Narada said: “Tittiri, Hastibhadra, Kumuda, Malyapindaka; the two Padmas; Pundarika; Pushpa; Mudugaraparnaka; Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Dhananjaya, Kaliya, Nahusha, Kambala, Ashvatara, Bahukunda, Maninaga, Apurana, Khaga, Vamana, Elapatra, Kukura, Kukuṇa, Aryaka, Nandaka, Kalasha, Potaka, Kailasaka, Pinjaraka, Airavata, Sumanomukha, Dadhimukha, Shankha, Nanda, Upananda, Apta, Kotaraka, Shikhi, Nishthurika, Virasa, and Surasa—these and many other serpents are descendants of Kashyapa. O Matali, if any boon here pleases you, then choose and behold.”
नारद उवाच
The verse emphasizes discernment in accepting gifts or boons: even amid abundance and power (here, the many Nāgas of a great lineage), one should choose thoughtfully. It also situates beings within dharmic cosmology by tracing them to Kashyapa’s lineage.
Narada enumerates prominent Nāgas, identifying them as descendants of Kashyapa, and addresses Matali, inviting him to select a boon or choice among what is available there.
