Bhishma said: “Here too, O Yudhishthira, the wise cite an ancient precedent from tradition—an old narrative in the form of a dialogue between Vasudeva (Sri Krishna) and the divine sage Narada.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse establishes a method of dharma-instruction: ethical questions are clarified by citing authoritative ancient narratives (itihasa), especially dialogues involving revered figures like Krishna and Narada.
Bhishma begins to answer Yudhishthira by introducing an old exemplar story—specifically, a past conversation between Vasudeva (Krishna) and the divine sage Narada—which he will recount to support his teaching.
