तमेव पूजयेयुस्ते प्रीत्या स्वमिव बान्धवम् । अभीरभीक्ष्णं कौरव्य कर्ता सन््मानमहति,डाकुओंसे पीड़ित होकर कष्ट पाते हुए अनाथ मनुष्यगण जिसकी शरणमें जाकर सुखपूर्वक रह सकें, उसीको अपने बन्धु-वान्धवके समान मानकर बड़ी प्रसन्नताके साथ उसका आदर-सत्कार करना उनके लिये उचित है; क्योंकि कुरुनन्दन! जो निर्भय होकर बारंबार दूसरोंका संकट निवारण कर सके, वही राजोचित सम्मान पानेके योग्य है
tam eva pūjayeyus te prītyā svam iva bāndhavam | abhīrabhīkṣṇaṃ kauravya kartā san mānam arhati ||
Those people should honor that very person with affection, as they would their own kinsman. O scion of the Kuru line, the one who, being fearless, repeatedly removes the distress of others is the doer who truly deserves royal esteem.
भीष्म उवाच
Public honor should be directed to the fearless protector who repeatedly alleviates others’ suffering; true worthiness for royal respect lies in providing dependable refuge and removing dangers for the helpless.
In the Śānti Parva dialogue, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on righteous governance: he defines the kind of person—one who safeguards people from recurring threats—whom society should treat like a beloved relative and honor with high esteem.
