Varṇa-dharma and Rājadharma: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Inquiry and Bhīṣma’s Normative Outline

dhanurkoṭyā mahārāja tena śailā vivardhitāḥ | mahārāja! sarveṣu manvantareṣu iyaṃ pṛthivī ūncī-nīcī bhavati; tadā venakumāraḥ pṛthuḥ dhanurkoṭyā samantataḥ śilāsaṃghān utkhāṭya ekasmin sthāne saṃcicāya; tasmāt parvatānāṃ lambatā vistāraś ca ucchrayas ca vivardhata iti |

Bhishma said: “O great king, by the very tip of his bow, the mountains were made to grow. In every Manvantara this earth becomes uneven—rising and sinking in places. At such a time, Prithu, the son of Vena, uprooted masses of rocks on all sides with the bow’s tip and gathered them into one place. Therefore the mountains’ length, breadth, and height increased.”
