Rāma–Jāmadagnya-janma-kāraṇa and Kṣatra-kṣaya
Paraśurāma’s origins and the depletion/restoration of kṣatriya lineages
हैहयानां कुले जातास्ते संरक्षन्तु मां मुने । पृथ्वी बोली--ब्रह्मन! मैंने स्त्रियोंमें कई क्षत्रियशिरोमणियोंको छिपा रखा है। मुने! वे सब हैहयकुलनें उत्पन्न हुए हैं, जो मेरी रक्षा कर सकते हैं ।।
haihayānāṁ kule jātās te saṁrakṣantu māṁ mune | pṛthvī bolī—brahman! mayā strīṣu bahavaḥ kṣatriya-śiromaṇayaḥ chāditāḥ | mune! te sarve haihaya-kulena utpannāḥ, ye mama rakṣāṁ kartum śaknuvanti || asti paurava-dāyādo vidūratha-sutaḥ prabho ||
“O sage, may those born in the Haihaya lineage protect me.” The Earth said: “O Brahman! I have concealed many foremost Kshatriyas among women. O sage, all of them are born of the Haihaya clan—men who are capable of protecting me. Moreover, O lord, there exists an heir of the Pauravas, the son of Vidūratha.”
वासुदेव उवाच
The passage underscores the Kshatriya obligation to protect the Earth and uphold social order: when disorder threatens, capable protectors arise through lineage and rightful succession, and the Earth herself is portrayed as seeking guardians who can restore stability.
The Earth, personified, declares that she has kept certain eminent Kshatriyas concealed among women and that these protectors are born in the Haihaya line; she further points to the existence of a Paurava heir, the son of Vidūratha, indicating a legitimate figure for restoring protection and rule.
