Janamejaya said: “The sage Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana (Vyāsa) is the heir and descendant of Parāśara. Yet now you again describe him as the son of Nārāyaṇa. How is this to be understood?”

The verse highlights a common Mahābhārata theme: a person can be described through both human genealogy and divine origin. It invites careful interpretation of statements about lineage versus spiritual identity, urging consistency and clarity in understanding sacred narration.
Janamejaya challenges the narrator’s description of Vyāsa. Earlier Vyāsa was presented in a human lineage (as Parāśara’s descendant), but now he is called ‘son of Nārāyaṇa.’ Janamejaya asks how these two descriptions fit together.
